project overview

Problem

Museums are a great resource for both, exploring cool artifacts and learning about the rich history behind artifact. Young adults however who would be interested in visiting museums for the purpose of educating themselves aren’t motivated enough because the entire experience isn’t catered to how they learn best. This is because most traditional museums present information in a way young adults aren’t generally used to.

Outcome

In order to address this problem, we designed an all-in-one mobile app solution that would enrich the museum visiting experience by making it more interactive and engaging. We achieved this by creating a museum app that featured AR-powered and voice-powered mini tours as well as a social media feed.

"How might we utilize technology to create an interactive and immersive museum visiting experience for young adults while still keeping it educational?"

Problem Discovery

user group

For the purpose of this project, we chose to focus on young adults specifically between the ages of 15-22 who see the value in visiting museums and learning about cool artifacts. However, they just aren’t motivated enough because the entire experience isn’t customized and tailored to their age group. They would have to go the extra mile to find out the museums they are interested in and actually push themselves to learn in a way they aren’t usually used to i.e. reading huge blocks of texts about historical facts behind each artifact.

user research

To better understand my user’s needs and frustrations, I conducted a survey with people in this age group to see how they described their museum visiting experience.

By walking through their journey of them first discovering a museum to once they are done visiting, I noted down their biggest frustrations and what exactly was it about the current method that wasn’t working well.

The survey revealed some interesting results which mostly matched my original hypothesis and I summarized the results into 3 main areas of frustration.

key pain-points

Reflecting on the pain points, I brainstormed several key features that the application would need to have to make the process more efficient.

‍

#1

Too many options of museums to pick from and users have to dig deep into separate sources to learn about each museum.

Current method

only 8% of respondents would use museum specific apps to discover what the museums out there have to offer.

#2

Not much of an educational experience because they can’t grasp the ‘story’ behind every single artifact.

Current method

information is usually presented in huge blocks of texts which according to 78% of respondents find boring to read and they just want to move on.

#3

Can’t retain much of what they learn at museums. It just becomes a 3 hour ‘leisure’ trip even if they want it to be educational.

Current method

only 4% of respondents use social media to share interesting facts they learnt even though 60% would to share if there was a platform specifically just for this.

design opportunities

Better discoverability

Instead of looking through multiple museum apps when exploring which museums to visit, these visitors need a platform where they can explore and discover the various museums that are out there.

More interactivity

By presenting the same information digitally in an interactive manner through AR powered and voice-powered tours on their own devices, these young visitors would be more keen to learn the “story” behind each artifact.

Retain what they learnt

To make it a memorable experience, visitors should be able to share and remember what they learnt at the museum by sharing the information with others who are also interested in learning.

Brainstorming possible solutions

version I

version II

Moving into high fidelity

visual guidelines

Feature I: Exploring the variety of museums

Visitors can explore the different types of museums listed on the app and access all the relevant information in one place as well as leave reviews.

Feature II: AR-powered and voice-powered tours

Museums are broken into mini tours so the exhibits are easy to navigate. The information is presented digitally through texts, images, AR tours as well as voice-over tours.

Feature III: Social Feed

A social media feed integrated in the app so visitors can retain what they learnt by sharing interesting facts and photos and interact with other posts

Learnings

reflections

Working as a designer at a fast paced student-run company was a worthwhile experience because we were able to break down the problem into various sections and tackle each of them separately. It was also great because we worked closely with engineers so I learnt a lot about technical feasibility of my designs

But if I were to go back in time ...

I would spend some extra time conducting primary research and focusing more on a defined age group and a specific geographical area. After the app is actually fully implemented, I would also spend some time working with the same users to test it out and add more customizations so users can cater it to the categories of museums they are actually interested in.
